Teaching Fellow - Education Focused - Mathematics & Statistics
About the Role
UNSW is one of Australia’s leading research and teaching universities, with a vibrant campus life and a strong sense of community and inclusion. The School of Mathematics and Statistics has more than sixty continuing academic staff and over thirty research staff, with research strengths in Bayesian and Monte Carlo Methods, Biostatistics and Ecology, Combinatorics, Data Science, Finance and Risk Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics, Optimisation, Stochastic Analysis, and Stochastic Modelling. The School also hosts the newly established UNSW Data Science Hub.
This role enhances existing links between UNSW Sydney and secondary schools, providing an opportunity for sharing ideas about the circumstances of first year students and approaches to teaching. The Teaching Fellow will participate in teaching and research activities, as well as assisting with course assessment, administration, curriculum development, and outreach activities. Flexible work arrangements may be considered for applicants from regional, rural or remote schools.
Note: To be eligible for this position, the appointee must not have previously been appointed as a Teaching Fellow at UNSW. This role is for 1 year with no possibility of extension.
Level: A – $113K – $121K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
Term: Fixed Term – 12 months (starting in January 2027)
Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week)
Reports to: Director of First Year Studies
Responsibilities
- Deliver mathematics tutorials and other teaching for up to 12 hours per week
- Carry out teaching related activities as allocated by the Head of School (or delegate), such as class preparation, administration of relevant records, informal consultation with students, exam supervision, marking assessments, and other coordination duties
- Depending on interest and capacity, undertake lecturing and engage in mathematical research or scholarship
- Assist in course assessment, administration and curriculum development and outreach activities
- Undertake administrative duties as specified by the Head of School and/or the Director, First Year Studies
- Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the psychosocial or physical health and safety of yourself or others
Selection Criteria
- Degree in Mathematics or related discipline
- Demonstrated strong mathematical background
- Demonstrated experience in teaching mathematics with recent involvement in teaching mathematics in years 11 and 12
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Interest in promoting mathematical thinking in schools and the community
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
