About the role

The School Age Teaching Assistant role is designed for creative, energetic, and career-oriented teaching professionals who are motivated to educate individuals with developmental disabilities in an ungraded self-contained classroom. This position offers on-going training and support from board certified behavior analysts and other qualified professionals to enhance and maximize career growth.

Responsibilities

  • Absorb and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Collect and record student behavior and performance data as directed by the teacher.
  • Participate in basic instructional activities and assist with the safety and supervision of students.
  • Attend and pass all required in-services and trainings.
  • Supervise substitute teachers and school age aides in the teacher’s absence.
  • Implement behavior support plans and physical restraint plans.
  • Accompany assigned students if they leave the building for programmatic or emergency reasons.
  • Maintain the Initial TA certification/file for the Initial TA Certification after the expiration of your NYSL1 TA certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Initial TA Certification or NYSL1 Teaching Assistant Certification.
  • An interest in working with students with disabilities.
  • Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Ability to modify the area to secure the safety of the children (e.g., move/push tables and other heavy objects up to 20 lbs.).
  • Ability to lift/move 20 lbs. (mats).
  • Ability to run after students up to 500 feet.
  • Ability to run to a classroom in need up to 500 feet.
  • Ability to kneel, twist, and bend.
  • Ability to respond to fire alarms.
