About the role
The School Age Teaching Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting students with developmental disabilities in an ungraded self-contained classroom. They assist teachers in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collect and analyze student data, and participate in various training sessions.
Responsibilities
- Absorb and implement IEPs as directed by the teacher.
- Collect and record student behavior and performance data.
- Participate in basic instructional activities and supervise students' safety and well-being.
- Attend and complete required in-services and trainings.
- Assume responsibility for classes as needed, maintaining proper student-to-teacher ratios.
- Support substitute teachers and aides during the teacher's absence.
- Implement behavior support plans and physical restraint plans as necessary.
- Accompany students during bus arrivals and departures.
- Ensure the classroom area is safe by modifying it as needed.
- Perform light lifting and moving tasks up to 20 lbs.
- Respond quickly to emergencies and follow safety protocols.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Initial Teaching Assistant (TA) Certification or NYSL1 Teaching Assistant Certification.
- Interest in working with individuals with disabilities.
- Good interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Qualifications
- Ability to modify the classroom environment to ensure student safety.
- Capacity to lift and move up to 20 lbs.
- Physical stamina to run up to 500 feet.
- Flexibility to work in various settings and classes.
Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to different teaching situations.
- Knowledge of applied behavior analysis principles.
