About the role

Under direction, through individual and group instruction, assists pupils to fulfill their capacities for mental, physical, emotional and social growth; uses teaching techniques appropriate to stimulate their abilities and interests; uses specialized materials, equipment and instructional procedures as necessary to meet the individual needs of blind or low-vision pupils.

Responsibilities

• Assists pupils in developing academic, social, and emotional skills
• Uses specialized materials, equipment, and instructional procedures to meet the individual needs of visually impaired pupils
• Teaches braille reading and writing, and other specialized techniques
• Trains in the use of various technological devices and optical aids
• Works with children with visual impairments aged birth through 21 years of age
• Teaches in both general education and special education settings
• May provide sign language support

Requirements / Qualifications

• Education and Experience: Bachelor of Arts Degree from an accredited college or university
• California Teaching Credential authorizing performance of service with programs for the visually impaired
• Possess specialized techniques and skills pertinent to working with the visually impaired, such as braille reading and writing, training in use of various technological devices and optical aids
• Background and/or certification in orientation and mobility
• Knowledge of technology for Braille, large print and talking software

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience working with children with visual impairments age birth through 21 years of age
• Experience working with children with severe disabilities
• Teaching experience in general education programs, elementary or secondary
• Ability to use Sign Language

Initial placement up to 20 years of creditable experience may be accepted upon verification. Master’s Degree – $2,000 annual stipend Doctorate Degree – $3,000 annual stipend

Pay

$59,464 - $126,388 Annually
