Teacher Substitute As Needed San Fernando Valley/Santa Clarita

VOALA (Volunteers of America Los Angeles) is a non-profit human services organization committed to serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities. Through Head Start and Early Head Start programs, we work with children (ages 0–5) and their families to provide skills, confidence, and a stable home life for a smooth transition into kindergarten and beyond. Services include health screenings, immunizations, nutrition assessments, mental health evaluations, developmental and physical delay referrals, ongoing health and dental care, healthy meals, and parent nutrition education. Programs serve cities across the Los Angeles area.

About the role

The Head Start Teacher (Substitute) creates a developmentally appropriate environment that helps children grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically, with the goal of achieving social competence. The role involves implementing curriculum for morning and afternoon classes, planning individual and group activities, integrating Head Start services (parent involvement, social services, nutrition, health, and mental health), and maintaining accurate records.

Responsibilities

• Plan and implement curriculum for children in morning and afternoon classes, including individual and group activities.
• Conduct daily classroom planning and integrate Head Start services (parent involvement, social services, nutrition, health, and mental health) into learning.
• Observe, screen, and assess children’s developmental levels and develop individualized goals.
• Provide a learning environment that reflects cultural and ethnic diversity and supports parents as primary educators.
• Maintain a physical environment compliant with state and local licensing requirements and health/safety standards.
• Complete accurate monthly paperwork and maintain children’s records in collaboration with the Family Advocate (FA).
• Act as a Mandated Reporter for instances of physical or sexual abuse.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

This is an on-site position requiring daily in-person attendance.

Requirements

• Must pass fingerprint clearance, background check (including criminal history, references, employment, and education verifications).
• Access to an automobile with valid California driver’s license and adequate insurance (or alternative transportation) for home visits and travel between sites.
• TB clearance within 6 months prior to hire.
• Annual influenza vaccination (Nov. 1–Mar. 31).
• Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunization.
• Health screening at time of employment.
• Ability to interact with children in a busy environment, including:
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent kneeling and squatting.
  • Ability to move quickly.

Qualifications

• 12 units in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development.
• Meets requirements for Associate Teacher Permit.
• Experience working with children.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1 year of teaching experience.
• Familiarity with Head Start performance standards, Creative Curriculum, and licensing regulations.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal).

Pay

$21.57 – $22.70 per hour.
