Teacher Assistant Substitute As Needed East/West/Central LA

VOALA (Volunteers of America Los Angeles) is a non-profit human services organization committed to serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities. Through Head Start and Early Head Start programs, we work with children (ages 0 – 5) and their families to provide skills, confidence, and a stable home life for a smooth transition into kindergarten and beyond. Services include health screenings, immunizations, nutrition assessments, mental health evaluations, developmental and physical delay referrals, ongoing health and dental care, healthy meals, and nutrition education for parents and children.

About the Role

The Head Start Co-Teacher (Substitute) will provide children with a developmentally appropriate environment that includes varied activities to foster social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth. The role aims to achieve social competence for each child while conducting observations, assessments, and maintaining accurate records in collaboration with the lead Teacher.

Responsibilities

• Provide an environment with varied activities to help children develop socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically, aligned with their age and developmental stage.
• Conduct daily classroom planning, maintain children’s records, and submit accurate monthly paperwork.
• Observe, screen, and assess child developmental levels; develop individualized goals based on needs.
• Deliver a planned program of activities that supports parents as the primary educators of their children.
• Create a learning environment reflecting the cultural and ethnic backgrounds of the children and communities served.
• Ensure a physical environment compliant with state and local licensing requirements and health/safety standards.
• Plan and implement curriculum for morning and afternoon classes, integrating Head Start services such as parent involvement, social services, nutrition, health, and mental health.
• Act as a Mandated Reporter, required to report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities.
• Perform other duties as required to fulfill program needs.

Requirements

• Must pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, employment and education verifications, and provide personal references.
• Access to an automobile with adequate insurance and a valid California driver’s license, or reliable alternative transportation for home visits and travel to various sites.
• Proof of TB clearance within the last 6 months at time of hire.
• Annual Influenza vaccination (between Nov. 1st - Mar. 31st).
• Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunization.
• Health screening at the time of employment.
• Ability to interact with children in a busy environment, including:
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently kneel and squat.
  • Ability to move quickly.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and 12 units of Early Childhood Education (ECE) / Child Development or
• Enrolled in, or completed, VOALA apprenticeship certification.
• Experience working with children.

Preferred Qualifications

• AA in ECE/Child Development with 24 units in Child Development or AA in a related field with 24 CD units, including 6 units of infant/toddler coursework for Early Head Start.
• Associate Teacher Child Development Permit or higher.
• 1 year of teaching experience.
• Familiarity with Head Start performance standards, Creative Curriculum, and licensing regulations.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish (written and verbal).

Pay

$21.57 - $21.60 per hour.
