About the Role

The teacher, specializing in 7-12 band, strings/orchestra, or choral music, performs instructional work with limited decision-making discretion to instruct classes and assist students in developing instrumental techniques, music reading, and performance. The role involves school-based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Follow the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
  • Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
  • Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develop and enforce reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure while maintaining order fairly.
  • Foster a classroom environment that promotes student engagement and achievement of learning objectives.
  • Plan and implement a music program that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students, aligning with the NC Essential Standards for Music.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional methods and adapt music instruction to benefit all students.
  • Integrate appropriate music technologies into instruction.
  • Assess and analyze student work using a variety of methods.
  • Use a consistent, fair, and supportable grading system.
  • Collaborate with other arts staff and classroom teachers for arts integration and curriculum alignment.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of musical equipment using the Materials Management Inventory System (MMIS) and ensure instruments remain in playing condition.
  • Maintain necessary forms and records for instrumental music study.
  • Pursue personal professional development and growth opportunities.
  • Perform safety drills and maintain a safe instructional environment, protecting students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Communicate program needs to the principal.
  • Collaborate with principals, colleagues, and feeder school music staff to ensure program continuity.
  • Seek alternative funding sources to supplement program needs.
  • Coordinate field trips as needed.
  • Perform related work as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including county and school board policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of Common Core and NC Essential Standards, as well as the North Carolina Testing Program for End of Course Testing.
  • Knowledge of General Statute 115C of NC State Law concerning Public Education, CMS policies, rules, and regulations, and the CMS Strategic Plan.
  • Knowledge of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
  • Knowledge of secondary music curriculum principles, standards, and expectations.
  • Knowledge of how to use data and information to make instructional decisions for students.
  • Knowledge of learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment, and research related to learning.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to business needs.
  • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to recognize various learning styles and appropriate levels of intellectual and social development.
  • Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment.
