About the role
Positions in this family are involved in professional level work teaching standard academic or commercial subjects in a state school, hospital, facility or institution. This includes writing teaching plans, providing individual and group instruction, and participating in staff development training sessions.
Responsibilities
- Prepares subject-specific lesson plans.
- Provides group classroom instruction for a specific grade level or subject and prepares and administers examinations.
- Encourages student learning through individual instruction, encouragement, counseling and guidance.
- Prepares progress reports and attendance reports for administrative review and report cards for individual students.
- Maintains order and discipline among students in the classroom and on school grounds; may direct social and recreational activities.
- Maintains inventory of books and supplies.
- Participates in staff meetings and provides reports on student progress.
- Provide direct support to students in developing ASL and English proficiency through individual or small-group instruction, co-teaching, and classroom integration.
- Observe and collaborate with teachers to integrate bilingual strategies into instruction across content areas.
- Assess students’ ASL and English skills, interpret assessment data, and assist in developing individualized language plans.
- Provide resources, modeling, and training for staff on bilingual and bicultural best practices.
- Support family engagement by offering bilingual workshops, resources, and communication strategies for home use.
- Work with the IEP team to ensure language goals are aligned with students’ educational needs.
- Assist with the development and adaptation of curriculum and materials that support bilingual learning.
- Collaborate with administrators to implement schoolwide bilingual education initiatives.
- Stay current on research, trends, and technology in bilingual Deaf education.
Requirements
- Possession of a current Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.
- Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Bilingual Education, Linguistics, Special Education, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in an educational setting.
- Demonstrated fluency in both American Sign Language and written/spoken English.
- Must have or obtain Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.
- Strong understanding of bilingual/bicultural education principles in Deaf education.
- Knowledge of language acquisition processes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
- Ability to assess language skills and adapt instruction to meet diverse needs.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, and families.
- Must meet the school’s required Sign Language Communication Policy proficiency level within the established timeframe.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development.
