Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) (2026-2027) PAR Mentor

About the Role

PAR Mentors provide mentoring, coaching, and support to two key groups: probationary teachers working towards tenure and tenured teachers requiring PAR support. The role aims to enhance instructional skills and student learning by accelerating professional development, with a focus on equity and culturally relevant practices.

Responsibilities

• Meet regularly (every 5-10 days) with assigned teachers to support professional growth in the Standards of Effective Instruction (SOEI), including lesson planning, culturally relevant materials, student data analysis, and classroom climate.
• Model exemplary teaching, co-teach, co-plan, observe, and provide feedback to support teacher growth.
• Align instruction with grade-level content standards, Site Improvement Plan (SIP) goals, and district priorities (equity, SEL, literacy, MTSS).
• Guide teachers in goal setting, self-reflection, and using formative data to assess their practice.
• Collaborate with administrators and site-based teams for aligned teacher support.
• Maintain and update required documentation, including the Mentor Log.
• Participate in mentor professional development, forums, case reviews, and trainings.
• For new teachers: accelerate growth along the SOEI continuum, complete secondary observations, guide through PDP and tenure processes, and facilitate New Teacher Orientation.
• For tenured teachers: assess skills, develop individualized plans, provide intensive assistance, and facilitate team meetings to monitor progress.

Qualifications

• Valid Minnesota teaching license.
• Tenured in Minneapolis Public Schools by 2022 or earlier.
• Highly preferred: success working with racially diverse students and staff, and experience in hard-to-staff schools.
• Highly preferred licensure areas: Special Education, Bilingual Spanish, Secondary, or Specialist (Art, Music, PE, Media Specialist, etc.).
• Preferred: minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience, recent classroom experience, and demonstrated expertise in standards-based instruction and differentiated learning.
• Experience in mentoring, coaching, or teacher leadership roles.
• Certified or willing to obtain certification in the SOEI Rubric.
• Strong organizational, time management, and collaboration skills.
• Commitment to professional growth and improving mentoring skills.
