About the role

The Office of Catholic Education seeks a Teacher of the Visually Impaired to join the teaching staff at St. Lucy School for Children with Visual Impairments. Located at 3031 Stamford Street, Philadelphia, PA 19136, the school provides specialized education for students who are blind or visually impaired.

Responsibilities

  • Determine functional and academic implications of eye reports and implement environmental and academic adaptations accordingly.
  • Communicate professionally with low vision specialists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists.
  • Conduct functional visual assessments and write functional vision reports.
  • Conduct learning media assessments and write learning media reports.
  • Develop and keep data for IEP goals to address educational needs identified through assessment.
  • Develop lesson plans and unit plans according to the curriculum established by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
  • Collaborate with general education classroom teachers to facilitate inclusion.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's or master’s degree in general education or special education.
  • Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired.
  • Knowledge of the EUB Literary Braille Code and the Nemeth Code.
  • Familiarity with speech synthesizer software for computer use, Apex Braille Note Taker Plus, and Braille embossers.
  • Familiarity with low vision devices such as the telescope, CCTV, and hand-held video magnifiers.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate data collection to monitor student progress toward IEP goals.
  • Ability to teach the general education curriculum to students with modifications for vision loss.
  • Knowledge of educational approaches utilized with students with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).
  • Orientation and Mobility certification preferred but not necessary.
