Teacher (Mixed) (Spanish/ESL).

About the Role

This position involves teaching at the middle or secondary school level, specifically for Spanish and English Language Development (ESL/TESOL) subjects within the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).

Responsibilities

• Plans, develops, and organizes long-range lesson plans and daily class work to ensure in-depth learning within the allotted timeframe to meet curriculum content standards.
• Selects, adapts, or modifies teaching methods or materials to effectively teach the assigned grade level(s) and subject matter.
• Supports, counsels, and motivates students to meet or exceed grade-level standards, using personal knowledge of individual students' personalities, backgrounds, and interests.
• Adheres to and implements safety and security procedures, contributing to a school climate conducive to learning, achievement, and citizenship.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Requirement.
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Direct deposit of pay is required.
• A two-year trial or probationary period may be required.
• Appointment is subject to a suitability/fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
• This position requires a Tier 1 (T1) investigation with Childcare Checks due to interaction with children and youth under the age of 18.

Qualifications

• Open to U.S. Citizens only.
• A valid, fully professional state teaching license in the relevant content areas or its equivalent as determined by DoDEA is required. The license must be unencumbered (not revoked, suspended, or probationary).
• Praxis I and II or seven years of teaching at the PreK-12 level may substitute for an unencumbered license, provided all minimum education requirements and qualification standards are met.
• Military spouses may receive consideration for an encumbered license under the MSLRA.
• A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution is required.
• Academic preparation of at least 40 semester hours (SH) in general education coursework distributed across fields such as English, history, social studies, mathematics, fine arts, languages, science, philosophy, and psychology.
• A minimum of 18 SH of professional teacher education coursework in areas such as learning processes, tests and measurement, educational philosophy, psychology, social foundations, teaching methods, and curriculum.

Specific Requirements by Position

• 0374 Teacher (Spanish):
  • A minimum of 24 semester hours of Spanish coursework or a minimum score of Intermediate High on the OPI from ACTFL.
  • A minimum of 6 semester hours of theory and methodology of teaching a foreign language.
• 0438 Teacher, English Language Development (ESL/TESOL):
  • A minimum of 24 semester hours in English Language Development (ESL/TESOL).
  • Coursework must include a course in sociolinguistics and a minimum of 6 semester hours in methods of teaching English as a second language.
  • Must be certified or certifiable in middle school or secondary English.

Education

• Foreign degrees and coursework from non-accredited institutions must be evaluated prior to acceptance through one of the following procedures:
  • Evaluation and interpretation by a current member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO).
  • Verification that the foreign institution is on a list endorsed by a regionally accredited U.S. university or a state department of education for teacher certification (requires an English translation of the transcript and degree document).
  • Evaluation by the graduate division of a regionally accredited U.S. university, declaring equivalency to similar U.S. undergraduate or graduate work.
• Graduates of non-accredited institutions may validate their undergraduate work by admittance to a graduate school and completion of a minimum of 5 SH of credit in a regionally accredited graduate college.
