Teacher, Grades 3-5

About the Role

The Teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses an appropriate instructional program in an elementary environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The role involves creating learning experiences, monitoring student progress, and communicating with parents. Teachers may be assigned to students from kindergarten through fifth grade and are responsible for promoting healthy academic and social behaviors while fostering student independence.

Responsibilities

• Establishes a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages student agency, ownership, and reflection.
• Designs and implements engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and instructional strategies to maximize student achievement.
• Personalizes instruction based on student needs.
• Assesses student growth in relation to educational goals and adheres to LCPS Assessment and Grading policies.
• Monitors and supports student behavior in instructional settings, hallways, playgrounds, and during field trips or lunch.
• Collaborates with colleagues, students, parents, and the community to promote student learning.
• May direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers.
• Actively participates in the school’s professional learning community to deepen understanding of curriculum, content, and student needs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
• Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
• Demonstrated knowledge of elementary content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodologies.
• Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
• Strong collaborative skills to build relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements

The role requires regular verbal communication to convey instructions and exchange ideas. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities, including learning, recalling, and applying practices and policies. Frequent sitting or remaining stationary for extended periods is required. The position may involve exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, or pull objects.

Salary is based on the LCPS Licensed Salary Scale (Scale A). For details, visit lcps.org/compensation.

Schedule

10-month position, 200 days per year, 7 hours per day.
