This position is a combined role across multiple schools: 0.2 FTE at Bates, 0.3 FTE at Perry, and 0.3 FTE at Shaw-Taylor. Applying to one position is sufficient for consideration, though you may apply to both. If selected, you will be hired for all listed positions.

About the Role

Boston Public Schools (BPS) seeks an exceptional Foreign Language Teacher to join a community of educators, learners, and leaders. Responsibilities

  • Accountability for Student Achievement
    • Set ambitious learning goals for all students, design cognitively demanding tasks, and model the belief that all students can master challenging material through effective effort.
    • Regularly assess students’ understanding with ambitious learning goals in mind and take ownership of adjusting instruction to meet goals despite setbacks.
    • Demonstrate passion and optimism about students, content, and the teaching profession.
  • Communicating Content Knowledge
    • Demonstrate mastery of and enthusiasm for the content area and its pedagogy.
    • Show understanding of how the subject matter applies in real-world settings and connects to other content areas and standards.
    • Convey content in creative and engaging ways that align with standards.
  • Equitable & Effective Instruction
    • Scaffold and differentiate instruction to enable all students to engage in complex thinking and rigorous academic work.
    • Use instructional practices that challenge, motivate, and engage all students while facilitating equitable, active participation.
    • Build a productive learning environment where every student participates and feels valued.
  • Cultural Proficiency
    • Actively create and maintain an environment where students’ diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges are respected.
  • Parent/Family Engagement
    • Engage with families and build collaborative, respectful relationships in service of student learning.

    • Regularly reflect on practice, seek and respond to feedback, and demonstrate self-awareness and commitment to continuous learning.
    • Participate in and contribute to a collaborative adult learning community.

Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree.
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in the required foreign language at the appropriate grade level.
  • Meet all state and federal guidelines to be fully licensed and Highly Qualified according to NCLB.
  • Ability to meet the Standards of Effective Teaching established by Boston Public Schools.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Experience teaching in urban schools.
  • Fluency in one of BPS’ official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.
  • Certification in Moderate Disabilities, English as a Second Language, or both (at the appropriate grade level(s)).
