About the role
The Health & Wellness Teacher is a vital member of the Guilmette Middle School community, contributing to the mission of Lawrence Public Schools by empowering students to develop knowledge, skills, and habits for lifelong well-being through engaging instruction in health, physical activity, social-emotional learning, and healthy lifestyle practices.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive and motivating role model, fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment that encourages students to develop lifelong healthy habits and a positive attitude toward wellness.
- Plan and deliver high-quality Health & Wellness instruction aligned with Massachusetts Health and Physical Education Frameworks, incorporating research-based practices that promote physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being.
- Design and implement lessons that develop students' health literacy, physical fitness, social-emotional skills, and decision-making abilities through active participation and meaningful learning experiences.
- Monitor student growth and progress in health and wellness competencies, providing specific, actionable feedback that supports individual development and goal attainment.
- Promote a culture of wellness by encouraging healthy choices, physical activity, teamwork, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making both in and outside the classroom.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, specialists, counselors, families, and community partners to support student wellness and integrate health-related concepts across the school community.
- Build supportive working relationships with colleagues and staff, contributing to a positive school culture and participating in professional learning opportunities.
- Maintain a safe and organized learning environment, ensuring that all activities, equipment, and instructional practices meet district and school safety expectations.
- Support school-wide initiatives that advance student health, wellness, attendance, and social-emotional development.
- Perform other responsibilities as needed and assigned by administration.
Requirements
- Massachusetts Physical Education (PreK-8) teaching license required.
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- Proficient in English.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred.
Skills
- Prior experience teaching physical education preferred.
- Knowledge of child development, health education, physical activity, nutrition, and social-emotional learning best practices for elementary-aged students.
- Ability to collaborate with teachers, instructional leaders, and partners to ensure instruction meets the needs of all students.
- Ability to design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned Health & Wellness instruction that meets diverse learner needs.
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to facilitate active, student-centered learning experiences.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use student data and assessments to monitor progress and inform instruction.
Pay
Pay range: $61,788 - $96,114.
This is a full-time non-exempt salaried position.
