About the Role
The Family Life Education (FLE) teacher assists instructional staff in implementing the FLE program objectives as established by the Code of Virginia, State Board of Education regulations, and the School Board. This position serves general education classrooms across various schools and performs duties independently due to its unique teaching specialty.
Responsibilities
- Plan and implement appropriate instructional and learning strategies, including determining suitable materials and utilizing multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning.
- Coordinate teaching schedules with various schools and departments.
- Manage student behavior in instructional settings to ensure a conducive learning environment and assist in managing behavior in other school areas.
- Participate in in-service and professional development activities, as well as staff meetings.
- Communicate instructional expectations to students and keep them informed of their progress.
- Engage with parents through conferences and other means.
- Collaborate with other professionals, such as school counselors.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license; endorsement in Health & Physical Education or Science preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Health and Family Life Education content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Skilled in using multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent human relations skills.

The following physical requirements are typical for this position:
- Regularly communicate ideas and instructions verbally, including conveying detailed or important information accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Possess normal cognitive abilities, including learning, recalling, and applying practices and policies.
- Frequently sit or remain stationary for long periods.
- Exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
Schedule
10 months / 200 days / 7 hours per day.
Pay
Licensed Salary Scale: https://www.lcps.org/compensation
Reports to: Supervisor, Health, PE and Driver Education. FLSA Status: Exempt. Remote Work Eligible: No. Union Designation: Certified.
Locations: Belmont Ridge Middle School and JL Simpson Middle School.
