Teacher, Family and Consumer Science

About the role

The Teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses an instructional program in a middle-school environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The role involves creating learning experiences, monitoring student progress, and communicating with parents. The Teacher also manages students outside the classroom, such as in hallways and on field trips, and prepares students for assessments in collaboration with school administration.

At the middle-school level, the Teacher may teach students from sixth through eighth grade, helping them transition into adolescence in a challenging, equitable, and developmentally responsive environment. The role builds on elementary fundamentals and prepares students for high-school curriculum pathways while motivating them in subject-specific content and competencies through authentic, engaging, and rigorous learning experiences.

Responsibilities

• Establishes a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages student agency, ownership, and reflection.
• Designs and implements authentic, engaging learning experiences using Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective strategies to maximize student achievement.
• Uses a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving.
• Personalizes instruction based on student needs and manages time to maximize learning opportunities.
• Assesses student growth in relation to educational goals and adheres to LCPS Assessment and Grading policy.
• Analyzes assessment data to inform instructional practices.
• Communicates regularly with students and parents/guardians about student progress.
• Manages student behavior in instructional and non-instructional settings to maintain a conducive learning environment.
• Collaborates with professional staff to plan instructional activities and maximize learning opportunities.
• Supports colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders to promote student learning and mastery of content.
• May direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers.
• Participates in the school’s professional learning community to deepen understanding of curriculum, content, and competencies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
• Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license in middle school with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
• Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodologies.
• Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
• Skilled in using multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong human relations skills.

Physical Requirements

The role requires regular verbal communication to convey detailed or important instructions. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply practices and policies. Frequent sitting or remaining stationary for long periods is required. The employee may occasionally exert up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.

10-month position, 200 days per year, 7 hours per day.
