Teacher - English Language Learners (ELL) (Temporary)

Temporary contract position for the 2026-2027 school year only, 0.70 FTE (192 contract days).

About the Role

The ELL Teacher develops English language learners' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to support access to grade-level academic instruction across content areas. This role implements effective instructional techniques, develops lesson plans, utilizes district-approved curriculum, and provides a safe learning environment. The teacher assesses English proficiency and communicates progress to students, parents, and administration.

Responsibilities

• Plan and prepare instruction through knowledge of content, pedagogy, and students, setting outcomes, utilizing resources, and designing assessments.
• Deliver effective instruction using communication, questioning techniques, student engagement, and assessments.
• Create a respectful classroom environment that validates students' home language and culture, establishes a culture for learning, and manages procedures and behaviors.
• Demonstrate professional responsibility by reflecting on teaching, maintaining records, communicating with families, participating in the professional community, and collaborating professionally.
• Administer assessments to determine English proficiency and program eligibility.
• Assess students' oral and written English skills for instructional placement and lesson planning.
• Advise parents/guardians on students' English language progress and reinforce classroom goals at home.
• Collaborate with school personnel, parents, and community agencies (e.g., Migrant Education) to improve student outcomes and address linguistic needs.
• Participate in meetings to inform school teams about students' linguistic profiles and recommend instructional decisions.
• Direct instructional assistants, volunteers, or student aides to support school programs and individual student needs.
• Model appropriate oral and written English to develop students' communication skills.
• Collaborate with grade-level teams, specialists, and other ESL teachers to support students' academic success.
• Attend ELL Department meetings for staff development and compliance.
• Comply with all state, district, school, and program policies, processes, procedures, and timelines.

Requirements

• State of Oregon Teaching License with ESOL PK-12 endorsement.
• Current First Aid Card.
• Bachelor’s Degree.
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certificates.

Skills & Qualifications

• Prior job-related experience.
• Skills to communicate clearly with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, motivate students, direct support personnel, and evaluate performance.
• Knowledge of curriculum, educational code, and district policies.
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods, maintain records, perform specialized tasks, and meet schedules/deadlines.
• Physical abilities include reaching, handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity.

Pay

2026-2027 annual salary range: $36,642 – $76,149 (prorated based on FTE and start/end dates). Initial placement on the salary schedule is based on education and contracted licensed experience. Eligible for a $1,400 specialty stipend if certified multilingual in Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, American Sign Language, or Russian (must pass a standardized proficiency test).
