Responsibilities

• Provide early childhood special education instruction to children and youth under the age of eighteen.

Requirements

• Proof of U.S. citizenship required.
• Direct deposit of pay is required.
• Two-year trial or probationary period may be required.
• Appointment subject to a suitability/fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation.
• This position requires a Tier 1 (T1) investigation with Childcare Checks due to interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Requirement.

Qualifications

Open to U.S. citizens.

• Must meet category-specific requirements for 0441 Teacher, Early Childhood Special Education.
• A minimum of 24 semester hours in special education, including 12 semester hours directly related to early childhood special education, is required. Types of courses should include:
  • Assessment and evaluation in special education
  • Classroom and behavior management
  • IEP development
  • Transition planning
  • Curriculum and instructional strategies in special education
  • Collaboration skills with families
  • Medical aspects of special education
  • Speech language development
• An unencumbered professional teaching license in early childhood special education or its state equivalent will fulfill these requirements.

Education

Foreign degrees and coursework from non-accredited institutions must be evaluated prior to acceptance. Three evaluation procedures are acceptable:

• The work may be evaluated and interpreted by the International Education Research Foundation, Inc., Credential Evaluation Service, Post Office Box 3665, Culver City, CA 90231-3665.
• The foreign institution that awarded the degree is on a list endorsed by a regionally accredited university or a state department of education for teacher certification in that state. This requires an English translation of the transcript and a copy of the document awarding the degree, along with an authenticated list produced by an American university or a state department of education.
• The work may be evaluated by the graduate division of a regionally accredited university and declared equivalent to similar undergraduate or graduate work in a U.S. institution.

Graduates of non-accredited institutions may validate their undergraduate work by admittance to graduate school and completion of a minimum of 5 semester hours of credit in a regionally accredited graduate college.
