About the role

This position plans course instruction, selects instructional materials, provides one-on-one and group instruction as needed, maintains records of student progress, and manages classroom behavior in one or more of the following areas: language arts, math, history, science, and life/job skills.

Schedule

  • Full-time during the school year (184 days)
  • Possibility of additional days for 2026/2027 summer school
  • Position starts August 21, 2026
  • Salary anticipated to increase by 2.6% effective September 1, 2026

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students individually or in groups for the purpose of optimizing development of each student and helping to enhance their academic skills
  • Assesses students' educational strengths and weaknesses for the purpose of documenting progress and developing individualized curricula
  • Prepares teaching materials for the purpose of adapting lessons to meet the individual needs of students
  • Develops course outlines and daily lesson plans for the purpose of selecting appropriate curriculum materials to address individual learning styles
  • Maintains security measures within the classroom for the purpose of complying with detention center policies and enforcing safety rules
  • Manages classroom behavior of students for the purpose of utilizing behavior modifications and established discipline rules
  • Monitors students for the purpose of evaluating their behavior daily and enforcing security and safety rules
  • Models respect, responsibility, and accountability for the purpose of demonstrating positive behavior for students
  • Participates in activities that promote professional development for the purpose of using clinical and educational research to enhance services
  • Attends various educational workshops, seminars, in-services, etc. for the purpose of maintaining professional knowledge
  • Supervises one or more paraprofessionals for the purpose of maximizing their efficiency and meeting work requirements
  • Works as a member of a team for the purpose of providing consistency throughout the classroom setting with respect to the management of student behavior
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Experience: Job-related experience within specialized field is required. Teaching Mathematics preferred.

Education: Bachelor's degree in job-related area required.

Certificates & Licenses: Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement (preferably at the secondary level). Mathematics endorsement preferred.

Clearances: WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (at employee's expense).

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Skills required include: adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications, planning and managing projects, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge required includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development, conflict resolution methods, and safety practices and procedures.

Abilities required include: scheduling activities, meetings, and/or events; gathering, collating, and classifying data; using basic job-related equipment; working independently with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyzing data utilizing defined but different processes; operating equipment using standardized methods; working with a significant diversity of individuals and groups; working with data of varied types and purposes; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working with incarcerated youth; working as part of a team; promoting a positive learning environment; and having regular and reliable attendance.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 35% sitting, 15% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally hazard-free environment.

SEBB health benefits are available if the position anticipates at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31).
