About the role

The Teacher Associate (Sp Ed - Lv II) position at Southeast Polk Community School District supports the educational team in providing specialized services to students with special needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with small groups and/or individual student instruction and supervision.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment in various school settings.
  • Operates standard school equipment and completes clerical tasks as assigned.
  • Reads and comprehends at the student’s grade level or above.
  • Communicates effectively with all staff and follows Kronos rules for clocking in and out.
  • Follows IEP and teacher's directives, implements daily activities, and maintains a clean, sanitary, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Records behavioral incidents and keeps all assigned paperwork up-to-date and submits in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a positive role model for the students and participates in home visits.
  • Assists in meal preparation and clean-up as needed.
  • Attends required staff meetings and completes annual Bloodborne Pathogens training.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with the needs of all Pre-K thru 12th Grade students.
  • Successful completion of physical, criminal background and child abuse registry check, and pre-work screening at time of hire.
  • Experience working in an educational setting.
  • Ability to obtain required training, including but not limited to the following: certification to administer medication to students, American Heart or Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification, Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI).
  • Knowledgeable about program policies and procedures.
  • Physical demands: must be capable of standing throughout the work day, lifting up to 50 pounds to waist level, carrying equipment or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds for a distance of 50 feet, and working in various temperatures and environments.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 48 credit hours post-secondary education or Para educator certification from the Iowa Department of Education.

Positive motivator, able to develop working rapport with the student, effective communication, patience, and ability to work with students with diverse needs.
