Teacher Assistant/Tutor

About the role

The position of Teacher Assistant/Tutor means an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and/or continued employment is subject to successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check.

Essential Functions

• Helps to assist students in integrating math, reading and writing skills.
• Maintains accurate academic records, program statistics on use of student resources and files.
• Affords assistance in developing students' communicative, study and time management skills and assists in the development of test taking strategies.
• Helps students to build confidence in subject areas and helps develop student problem solving and critical thinking abilities.
• Helps students develop math, science, reading and language skills in preparation for the state mandated tests, such as, PARCC, PSAT, SAT/ACT or equivalent.
• Attends all staff development and training sessions.
• Affords assistance in creating a learning environment that will facilitate the desire to learn and help students to gain self-motivation for self-improvement.
• Affords assistance in the administration and evaluation of standardized diagnostic and placement tests.
• Administers an emergency lesson plan in the absence of an instructor.

Prerequisite Qualifications

• Applicants should have completed the equivalent course load of a sophomore in college (24 Credits) and be a student in good academic standing or a college graduate.
• At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted, where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, and equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Related work and/or volunteer experience is preferred but not required.

Salary Information

In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate/range for this position is $16.00-$30.00 (USD).

NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
