About the Role
Assists the instructional staff in implementing plans and programs related to academic or specialized areas. Performs various non-instructional tasks in direct support of the teaching-learning process, including supervision of students in the classroom.
Responsibilities
- Works directly with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subjects initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assists teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional lessons, methods, strategies, and materials to meet the individual needs of students.
- Organizes materials for each group/student, sets up learning stations, laboratories, and activity centers, and assists students having difficulty.
- Leads and/or facilitates group discussions, sharing time, individual recitation, or individual work.
- Prepares a variety of instructional materials, including posters, charts, transparencies, game boards/cards, and assists with bulletin boards, exhibits, and displays.
- Observes and gathers assessment data on students, discussing observations and progress with instructional staff.
- Provides assistance in the supervision of students in the classroom, including lunch duties, playground, and bus duties as directed.
- Assists in the administration of tests/assessment instruments and records data in record books, master charts, or assessment forms.
- Performs clerical tasks such as correcting work papers/tests, keeping daily attendance, and maintaining student folders/records.
- Works with teachers/students on special projects, lessons, or assignments.
- Assists in storing, inventorying, and requisitioning instructional materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Aids in organization and housekeeping tasks for laboratories, learning stations, work areas, or other instructional settings.
- Attends and actively participates in staff development activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
- 48 college credit hours or a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment issued by ETS or NES required.
- Previous training and/or experience in an educational/instructional environment preferred.
- Upon hire, a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment, in lieu of 48 college credit hours, issued by ETS or NES required.

- Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., video/web conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint).
Career Ladder
- Qualification Requirements for Employment in Higher Grade as a New Hire or Transfer: Successful completion of 30 semester hour credits earned after July 1, 1993, from a Regionally Accredited college or university.
- Qualification Requirements for Title I Facilities: New hires or transfers who have achieved Highly-Qualified ParaEducator status through successful completion of the ParaPro assessment or post-secondary education are eligible for placement at a higher grade, contingent on the school's Title I status.
- Eligibility for Promotional Increase from Lower Grade to Higher Grade:
- Successful completion of 30 semester hour credits earned after July 1, 1993, from a Regionally Accredited college or university.
- Consistent maintenance of an effective and orderly work environment.
- Consistent compliance with general office procedures, including standards in the AACPS Employee Handbook, demonstration of discretion and excellent customer service, and regular and punctual attendance.
