Qualifications

  • Completed at least 2 years of study (forty-eight semester hours) at an institution of higher education; or obtained an associate’s degree; or met a rigorous standard of quality via a formal assessment (Mississippi Test: ACT Work Keys – Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Writing Subtests).
  • Pass a criminal background check and a current child-abuse registry check as required by Mississippi Code §37-9-17.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for and interest in working with young students.
  • Pleasing personality and professional demeanor.
  • A satisfactory employment record.

Responsibilities

  • Support students with disabilities on a daily basis to ensure they gain the full benefits of the special-education program.
  • Hear students in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks; guide and assist them without direct instruction.
  • Help the teacher deliver an individualized, diagnostic approach to instruction.
  • Assist with individual student needs while the teacher works with other groups.
  • Supervise small-group activities and set up interest corners under the teacher’s direction.
  • Help absent students make up missed work.
  • Operate classroom technologies as directed by the teacher.
  • Support regular-program teachers with special-education students who are mainstreamed.
  • Provide general supervision of students in halls, restrooms, playgrounds, and other campus areas, including diaper changing and/or toileting.
  • Promote parent and community involvement in the instructional program.
  • Carry out activities assigned by and under the direction of the teacher.
  • Assist substitute teachers and maintain records as required.
  • Strictly abide by confidentiality regulations and route all parent communication through the classroom teacher.
  • Physically restrain students during crisis situations; attend annual district-approved restraint training.
  • Perform other duties assigned by administrators.

Students may exhibit behaviors such as running, hitting, biting, scratching, kicking, and occasional aggression.

Equipment & Travel

  • Uses standard office equipment: personal computers, printer, copier, fax machines, calculator, and telephone.
  • Travel to district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands

  • Works in standard office and school-building environments.
  • Must be capable of physically restraining students and managing aggressive behaviors.
