Job Summary
Provide instructional and non-instructional services to students in assigned group of infants/toddlers, preschoolers and/or school age children under the general supervision of a certified special education teacher.
Responsibilities
- Understand and promote Elizabeth Seton Children’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure application with organizational policies and procedures.
- Aid the special education teacher in implementing IEP and IFSP goals for each student in assigned classroom as detailed in the weekly lesson plan.
- Act in the capacity of a substitute teacher, in the absence of a classroom teacher, as per New York State Education Department regulations.
- Collaborate with classroom team in designing lesson plan activities based on knowledge of children with special needs and child development.
- Work with individual and/or small groups of students on learning goals during classroom activities as directed by the teacher and/or related service therapists.
- Assist teacher in maintaining accurate classroom documentation (student attendance and health checks, observational record keeping for IEP/IFSP goal tracking, classroom housekeeping task, etc.).
- Transport students to and from school; ensuring they are seated securely and all necessary adapted equipment is in working order.
- Collaborate with classroom team to maintain an organized and safe learning environment (being aware of classroom activities and location of children at all times; anticipating and responding to individual needs of all children; ensure all equipment in working order; sanitize toys and other equipment according to Coleman policy).
- Carry out standards for customer service; quality improvement; professional development; environmental, safety and infection control practices; confidentiality, corporate compliance and all other John A. Coleman policies and procedures; attend all mandatory in-services to ensure regulatory compliance and best practices in working with students and their families.
- Collaborate with colleagues and leadership team in creating and implementing a school-wide Professional Development Plan.
- Perform other tasks to support the operations of the school as assigned by School Administration.
Qualifications
- Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Experience: Experience with children and/or with special needs.
- Employee Requirements: Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently; meet or exceed all health standards and requirements for the position as established by NYDOH and all other regulatory agencies; meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this School which includes a medical and physical examination; must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds; perform tasks that may involve exposure to the student’s blood/body fluids; must be able to assist in the evacuation of students, if necessary.
- Working Conditions: Will work in a well-lighted and ventilated area; subject to frequent interruptions; may be asked to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
- Hourly Rate: $24.80/Hr.
