Job Summary

The Bilingual Teacher Assistant reports to the School Principal and works under the supervision of a teacher holding a valid state certificate. This position utilizes bilingual skills in English and Spanish to assist in the instruction of pupils, supervise students, and perform related duties.

The Bilingual Teacher Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Using bilingual skills and assisting in the supervision of students during lunchroom and playground activities
  • Providing security functions within the school, such as monitoring corridors and reviewing student identification cards
  • Aiding students in understanding and completing classroom assignments
  • Aiding teachers in preparing bulletin boards and displaying students' work in classrooms
  • Operating photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials
  • Maintaining the orderly arrangement of classrooms
  • Greeting and directing visitors to appropriate areas of the school
  • Consulting with teachers regarding concerns of individual students
  • Operating audio-visual equipment, such as video cassette recorders, movie projectors, film strip projectors, tape recorders, and phonographs
  • Tutoring students under the supervision of the classroom teacher
  • Aiding in the collection and grading of students' homework assignments and examination materials
  • Aiding in the supervision of the loading and unloading of students on school buses
  • Aiding in the receipt, processing, and issuance of new books under the supervision of the classroom teacher
  • Aiding in the collection of daily classroom absentee reports and contacting parents and guardians to verify causes of student absences
  • Aiding elementary school teachers with wraps and toilet recesses as necessary
  • Aiding in the supervision of the school procedure to sell public transportation passes to students

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • License: Valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) required, which may be applied for and obtained after the successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of college credit at a college or university accredited by the North Central Association or successful completion of a paraprofessional exam (WorkKeys or ParaPro).

Conditions of Employment

  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency - Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
