Key Responsibilities
- Assist Special Education Teachers and General Education Teachers in planning and implementing learning experiences
- Encourage the involvement of the foster/adoptive families in the program and support the development of relationships between children and their families
- Aid in the development of lesson plans by compiling and arranging materials, obtaining visual aids and supplies for students and instructors, and distributing and collecting teaching materials
- Maintain classroom order and monitor student behavior
- Provide individualized instruction to students requiring special assistance
- Prepare administrative reports such as attendance reports, student records, check papers and projects
- Prevent client abuse by adhering to all policies and procedures, attending periodic training, reporting suspicious and inappropriate behavior, and following mandatory abuse reporting requirements
- Maintain a high standard of role model behavior for youth
- Participate in training and development activities as required
- Report any acts, incidents or conditions that reflect the possibility of inappropriate youth-to-youth or staff-to-youth relationships
- Report any use of physical force and all unusual incidents per guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed
Requirements
- Education – High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience – Minimum of 3 years’ prior relevant teaching assistant experience working with children with developmental and intellectual and/or physical disabilities
Skills
- Ability to think and act independently
- Advanced oral and written communication skills
Physical Demands
- Must be in good physical health and emotionally stable
- Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling and carrying/lifting up to 50 pounds
- Occasional climbing, bending or crouching
- Continuous concentration to detail; ability to remember multiple tasks, oral and written communication; and an attention span of 1+ hour(s) on a task
Other
- Maintain an appropriate and valid state driver’s license
- Must meet state criminal background check requirements
