About the Role

The Teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses an appropriate instructional program in a high school environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students (grades 9–12) to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The role involves creating learning experiences, monitoring student progress, and communicating with parents. Teachers promote a challenging, equitable, and developmentally responsive environment, preparing students for life after high school through rigorous, relevant, and engaging curriculum pathways. The position also includes managing student behavior outside the classroom, such as in hallways, on field trips, and during after-school activities.

Responsibilities

• Establishes a safe and supportive learning environment that encourages student agency, ownership, and reflection.
• Designs and implements authentic, engaging learning experiences using Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective instructional strategies to maximize student achievement.
• Uses a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving.
• Personalizes instruction based on student needs and manages time to optimize learning opportunities.
• Assesses student growth in relation to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes, adhering to LCPS Assessment and Grading policy.
• Analyzes assessment data to refine teaching practices and improve student outcomes.
• Communicates regularly with students and parents/guardians about academic progress.
• Manages student behavior in instructional and non-instructional settings (e.g., hallways, school grounds, field trips).
• Collaborates with professional staff to plan instructional activities and maximize learning opportunities.
• Supports colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders to promote student mastery of content and competencies.
• May direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers.
• Participates in the school’s professional learning community to deepen curriculum understanding and create effective assessments.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
• Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
• Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodologies.
• Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
• Skilled in using multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
• Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent human relations skills.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly communicates orally, requiring clear and accurate expression of ideas.
• Frequently sits or remains stationary for extended periods.
• Occasionally exerts up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
• Requires normal cognitive abilities, including learning, recalling, and applying practices and policies.

Schedule

10 months, 200 days, 7 hours per day.
