Teacher Apprentice for Correctional Education Facilities at South Mountain Secure Treatment Unit. Directly responsible to the facility Principal or designee for supervision and evaluation.
Responsibilities
- Assists the instructor in implementing classroom procedures, including preparing material, progress monitoring, grading, and monitoring students.
- Implements de-escalation techniques and physical intervention, in accordance with safe crisis management competencies when necessary.
- Supports in maintaining discipline and managing classroom routines and procedures.
- Communicates and works cooperatively with co-workers and students to meet student needs.
- Prepares lessons, units, and projects to complete clear learning objectives and monitors student completion.
- Adapts teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of students.
- Encourages students to explore learning opportunities and career paths.
- Creates, assigns, and grades various assessments for students, including tests, quizzes, essays, and projects.
- Works with students one-on-one when they need extra help or attention.
- Provides constructive feedback to students to support their academic growth.
- Fosters a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and participation.
- Actively participates in professional development opportunities, workshops, and training sessions to enhance teaching skills and stay updated with current educational practices.
- Participates in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
- Maintains effective communication with students, parents, and other staff members.
- Provides feedback to other teachers on student progress, challenges, and achievements.
- Assists with administrative tasks such as attendance recording, record-keeping, progress monitoring, and organizing student files.
- Orders educational supplies and materials for the Corrections program.
- Assists in facilitating the personal, social, and intellectual development of students.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have completed at least 60 college credit hours.
- Experience working with children.
- Desire to continue career in the area of education.
- Experience with Corrections Education preferred.
- Ability to assist in instruction in all subject areas.
- Passion for working with children and supporting their educational development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to establish positive relationships with students and colleagues.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in a dynamic educational environment.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced teachers.
Required clearances: Act 24 Arrest and Conviction Report, Act 34 Pennsylvania Criminal History Clearance, Act 151 Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance, Act 114 Federal Criminal History Clearance.
