VOALA provides a variety of social services to Los Angeles area communities such as Head Start programs, Upward Bound college prep programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing programs as well as drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
About the role
The Head Start Teacher Aide is a critical member of the team and will be employed at school sites on a daily basis, serving staff, children, and volunteers while representing the organization. This role ensures all health, safety, and nutrition guidelines are followed.
Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service by serving meals to children in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.
- Prepare meals and replenish food items during mealtime.
- Communicate with the central kitchen, Site Supervisor, and teaching teams on menu changes, allergies, and food counts to ensure accurate quantities and paperwork.
- Monitor food allergies and alert kitchen and site staff of any concerns.
- Post monthly menus and update them as necessary.
- Assist classrooms and teachers during mealtime.
- Maintain sanitation and disinfecting practices, ensuring no cross-contamination occurs when washing dishes, cleaning, and storing.
- Sanitize and restock kitchen and materials, conduct inventory, and order supplies/food as applicable.
- Help provide a physical environment consistent with state and local licensing requirements and the health and safety needs of the children.
- Ensure site staff and parent volunteers follow CACFP rules and regulations.
- Other duties as required to fulfill the program mission.
Essential Duties
- Serve children during mealtimes and assist Teachers and classrooms.
- Communicate with the central kitchen, post menus, track food allergies in children, and alert staff of any concerns.
- Maintain sanitation and disinfecting practices, preventing cross-contamination.
- Restock kitchen and materials.
- Work to keep the physical environment consistent with state and local licensing requirements and the health and safety needs of the children.
Requirements
- Must pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment, and education verifications.
- Proof of TB clearance within 6 months prior to hire.
- Annual Influenza vaccination (between Nov. 1st - Mar. 31st).
- Pertussis (whooping cough) and measles immunization.
- Health screening at the time of employment.
- Ability to interact with children in a busy environment, including:
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Frequently kneel and squat.
- Ability to move quickly.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED and certification of 12 ECE/CD units, or
- Enrolled in, or completed, apprenticeship certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- 24 units in ECE or CD, including 3 units of infant/toddler for EHS.
- Assistant Teacher Permit or higher.
- Food handler certificate.
- Certifications in public health, nutrition education, food safety, or related field.
- Work experience in Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
- Promotes nutrition curriculum, activities, and initiatives.
- Bilingual English/Spanish or other languages such as Armenian or Farsi.
Pay
$20.03 - $21.08 per hour
