Duties
- Provide direct and indirect student support as needed.
- Aid in general supervision of students in various settings such as classrooms, hallways, and the community.
- Assist with classroom management and monitor individual student behavior through crisis intervention using positive behavior management strategies or other methods supported by the program.
- Prepare classroom materials, projects, demonstrations, and displays.
- Perform clerical and record-keeping duties or other general housekeeping tasks as directed by the supervisor.
- Support test accommodations for students, including class tests and Regents examinations.
- Use or learn basic computer skills, including email.
- Perform other duties related to specific programs as assigned.
Qualifications
- Civil Service eligibility for Teacher Aide/Paraeducator required: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER: One (1) year of full-time or its part-time paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with people with disabilities; OR, Possession of a certificate of completion of a course of Child Care from an occupational school, the American Red Cross, or similar agency; OR, A combination of experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
- Work collaboratively with team members to effectively support all individuals in program assignments.
- Show strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with adults and individuals enrolled in the program.
- Be physically capable of performing essential functions of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation), including but not limited to: Performing physical intervention techniques, lifting/carrying/moving up to 50 lbs., standing, stooping, bending, crouching, squatting, kneeling, and/or reaching, supporting/transporting students in wheelchairs and/or providing assistance with transfer, ambulation, and positioning, escorting and/or walking with (in some cases running after) students in multiple settings such as in community-based activities, nature walks, and school buildings.
