About the Role
Under general supervision of a certified teacher or school administrator, a Teacher Aide performs non-instructional duties to assist certified teachers in a classroom setting. This role relieves teachers of routine duties related to the learning process that can be performed by non-professional personnel. The position may include one-on-one assistance for students with special needs. Duties differ from those of a School Monitor due to the more complex nature of assignments, which may require specific skills or abilities. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this role.
Responsibilities
- Provides assistance in direct support of a teacher, including checking homework or examination papers, averaging grades, checking attendance, collecting money, preparing charts, making lists, maintaining classroom files, and operating duplicating machines.
- Assists with physical tasks such as maintaining bulletin boards, making posters, obtaining and returning reference materials, distributing supplies, setting up audio-visual, computer, television, and laboratory presentations.
- Provides personal physical assistance to individual children, including help with clothing, feeding, wash-up, and bathroom needs.
- Assists in proctoring and other tasks related to the administration of examinations.
- May work as a one-on-one aide for children with disabilities, assisting with note-taking, mobility, personal care, and accompanying students on school buses.
- May assist students with disabilities in using technology and adaptive equipment to facilitate learning, mobility, and communication.
- Maintains order and discipline in the temporary absence of the teacher or in classrooms, hallways, lunchrooms, etc., on either a regularly assigned or occasional basis.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
- Experience working with children.
- Fingerprint clearance.
- Completion of required State Workshops on Child Abuse, School Safety, and Dignity for All Students.
- Approval by the Westchester Department of Civil Services.

- Working knowledge of classroom routine and technology used in a classroom setting.
- Skill in dealing with children and youth.
- Ability to establish good working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, and the general public.
- Ability to maintain discipline and follow oral and written instructions.
- Effective communication skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
- Clerical aptitude, good judgment, resourcefulness, tact, courtesy, and dependability.
- Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.
Pay
$17.79 - $30.49/hour (2026/2027).
