Teacher Aide (1:1), Probationary (Middle School)

Under general supervision of a certified teacher or school administrator, a Teacher Aide performs noninstructional duties to assist certified teachers in a classroom setting. Relieves teachers of routine duties related to the learning process which can be performed by non-professional personnel. May be assigned as a one-on-one aide to assist a student with special needs.

Responsibilities

• Provides assistance in direct support of a teacher, including checking homework or examination papers, averaging grades, checking attendance, collecting money, preparing charts, making lists, maintaining classroom files, preparing materials, and operating duplicating machines.
• Provides physical aid to the teacher, such as maintaining bulletin boards, making posters, obtaining and returning reference materials, distributing supplies, setting up audio-visual, computer, television, and laboratory presentations.
• Assists with personal physical care of individual children (e.g., clothing, feeding, wash-up, bathroom).
• Assists in proctoring and other tasks related to the administration of examinations.
• May work as a one-on-one aide for children with disabilities, assisting with note-taking, mobility, personal care, and accompanying students on school buses.
• May assist students with disabilities in using technology and adaptive equipment to facilitate learning, mobility, or communication.
• Maintains order and discipline in the temporary absence of the teacher or in classrooms, hallways, lunchrooms, etc.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
• Experience working with children.
• Fingerprint Clearance.
• Completion of required State Workshops on Child Abuse, School Safety, and Dignity for All Students.
• Approval by the Westchester Department of Civil Services.

• Working knowledge of classroom routine and technology used in a classroom setting.
• Skilled in dealing with children and youth.
• Ability to establish good working relationships with students, parents, school personnel, and the public.
• Ability to maintain discipline and follow oral and written instructions.
• Effective communication skills in English (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding).
• Clerical aptitude, good judgment, resourcefulness, tact, courtesy, and dependability.
• Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

Pay

$17.79 - $30.49/hour
