About the role

The Teacher Aide is a member of the teaching team who assists with the implementation of classroom activities, under the direct supervision of an Assistant Teacher, Teacher, or Lead Teacher. Teacher aides perform daily routine tasks that establish the basic foundation for a healthy, safe, and educational environment. Teacher Aides include student teachers, work/study students, summer work students, senior workers, and volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains a safe and healthy learning environment.
  • Promotes healthy eating practices.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment.
  • Is aware of necessary information to ensure the safety and well-being of the children.
  • Maintains an orderly learning environment.
  • Advances physical and intellectual competence.
  • Supports a balance between child-initiated and teacher initiated activities.
  • Supports a balance between quiet and active learning activities.
  • Uses equipment and materials for indoor and outdoor play that promotes children's physical development.
  • Supports an integrated curriculum that meets the needs of individual children.
  • Supports experiences that promote language and literacy development.
  • Supports activities that promote the acquisition of math and science concepts.
  • Affords assistance with extra-curricular programs such as music, gymnastics, swimming, etc.
  • Supports social and emotional development and provides positive guidance.
  • Supports activities that develop positive self-esteem.
  • Supports activities that develop social skills.
  • Supports culturally diverse experiences.
  • Uses and promotes positive guidance techniques.
  • Supports a wide variety of creative and expressive activities.
  • Sets up routines with smooth transition periods.
  • Communicates with children at their developmental level.
  • Encourages children to be independent.
  • Establishes positive and productive relationships with families:
    • Greets parents at pick up and drop off times.
    • Supports positive relationships with families.
    • Supports a variety of ways that families can participate in the program.
  • Maintains a commitment to professionalism.
  • Promotes the center's philosophy and educational objectives.
  • Supports the center's code of ethical conduct.
  • Engages ongoing staff development to improve personal and professional goals.
  • Supports the professional growth and development of colleagues by sharing materials and information and providing helpful feedback and encouragement.

Qualifications

  • Warm, supportive attitude toward children and reliable.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Flexible in receiving assignments or adapting to changes in the program.
  • Willing to accept supervision in order to improve performance.
  • Must be willing to perform other duties as required.

Skills

  • Ability to perform the job of an early childhood teacher (e.g., able to lift children and/or equipment up to 40lbs; able to stoop, bend, sit and stand for extended periods of time).
