About the Role
The high school teacher performs instructional work under moderate supervision, providing leadership in the educational environment to encourage and nurture learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to meet individual student needs and carries out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.
Responsibilities
- Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures, as well as the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
- Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop and maintain fair classroom behavior and procedures.
- Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
- Plan and implement a program of study in the assigned content area tailored to student needs, interests, and abilities.
- Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods to engage them in the learning process.
- Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
- Prepare for classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
- Diagnose student learning challenges regularly and seek assistance from central office staff as needed; maintain accurate records for IEPs and 504 Plans.
- Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.
- Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities; encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere through challenges.
- Use techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking.
- Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress.
- Act as a test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program in accordance with state policies and guidelines.
- Observe and assess students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical needs on a regular basis.
- Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, priorities, resource needs, and encourage involvement.
- Confer with parents/guardians, counselors, and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic challenges.
- Prepare and implement enrichment programs and remediation.
- Attend Professional Learning Community (PLC) and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning.
- Participate in professional development to improve skills and knowledge.
- Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment.
- Perform related work as assigned or required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Valid NC Teaching certification or eligibility for NC Teaching certification in the assigned area.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles, standards, and expectations in the assigned area.
- Ability to utilize data and information to make instructional decisions for students.
- Knowledge of learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment, and research related to learning.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
- Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice and business needs.
- Effective problem-solving and sound judgment in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.
Pay
Certified salary.
Schedule
Full-time, 10 months.
Reports to: Principal
Place of work: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools premises, with the possibility of assignment to other locations as needed.
