About the Role

The high school teacher performs instructional work with limited decision-making discretion, providing leadership in the educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met, carrying out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures, as well as the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.
• Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop and maintain fair classroom behavior and procedures.
• Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.
• Plan and implement a program of study in the assigned content area tailored to students' needs, interests, and abilities.
• Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods to achieve curriculum goals.
• Establish clear learning objectives aligned with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Standard Course of Study and district curriculum framework.
• Prepare for classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
• Diagnose student learning challenges and seek assistance from central office staff as needed; maintain accurate records for Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans.
• Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.
• Prepare materials and classrooms for activities; encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere through challenges.
• Use techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking.
• Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress.
• Act as a test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program in compliance with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Observe and assess students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical needs.
• Meet with parents/guardians to discuss student progress, priorities, and resource needs; encourage parent involvement.
• Confer with parents/guardians, counselors, and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic challenges.
• Prepare and implement enrichment programs and remediation.
• Attend Professional Learning Community (PLC) and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning.
• Participate in professional development to improve skills and knowledge.
• Perform safety functions/drills to maintain a safe instructional environment.
• Take necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Perform related work as assigned or required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Valid NC Teaching certification or eligibility for NC Teaching certification in the assigned area.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills & Abilities

• Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles, standards, and expectations in the assigned area.
• Ability to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students.
• Understanding of learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
• Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice.
• Effective communication, reasoning, and judgment skills.
• Ability to maintain positive working relationships and employ sound communication in all settings.
• Problem-solving skills and ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business.
• Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment.

Pay & Schedule

Certified, full-time position with a 10-month schedule.
