About the role
In the absence of the permanent teacher, the substitute teacher will conduct a class session from a prepared lesson plan. The substitute will maintain a safe, healthy, and therapeutic learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications
- Teacher 1: Bachelor’s Degree in any field.
- Teacher 2: New York State provisional/initial/conditional initial certification in the appropriate specialty.
- Teacher 3: New York State permanent/professional certification in the appropriate specialty.
- Teacher 4: New York State permanent/professional certification in the appropriate specialty and two years of post-certification teaching experience in the appropriate specialty.
Preferred Certification: 7-12 grade level; certification may also be at K-6 grade level. Appointment level is commensurate with certification.
Background Investigation Requirements
- Criminal Background Check (CBC) including State and federal Criminal History Record Checks.
- All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or falsified/omitted information may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment.
- Fingerprinting required to obtain criminal history information; fees may apply.
- Screening against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR); fees may apply.
- For Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY) appointees: check against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL); individuals found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect are barred from appointment.
