$4,057.00 – $5,078.00 per month ($48,684.00 – $60,936.00 annually)

Qualifications

• Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.
• One year of full-time experience repairing and/or maintaining engines or related mechanical components (transmissions, ignitions, brakes, etc.).
• Coursework at an accredited technical or trades school in automotive technology, auto mechanics, or diesel mechanics may substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis (up to 12 months).

Requirements

• Possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Class D driver’s license.
• Within eleven months of hire, obtain at your own expense either:
  • A Tennessee Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement (57 restriction allowable), or
  • If under age requirements for Class A, a Tennessee Class B CDL. Upon meeting age requirements, upgrade to Class A CDL with N endorsement within eleven months.
• Maintain required certifications in work zone flagging, OSHA, brine making, CDL, basic computer skills, and TDOT equipment operation.

Responsibilities

• Repairing and Maintaining Electronic Equipment
  • Calibrate and repair computerized groundspeed and measuring controls in tack trucks, snow/ice removal equipment, salt brine production units, herbicide applicators, mapping vehicles, asphalt pavers, and milling machines.
  • Use electronic testing tools (multimeters, scan tools, electrical probes, battery/load testers) to diagnose and repair electronic systems.
• Repairing and Maintaining Mechanical Equipment
  • Diagnose, analyze, and repair heavy-duty tracked/wheeled equipment (excavators, snowplow trucks, forklifts, tractors, backhoes, dozers, graders, loaders, under-bridge inspection trucks, bucket trucks, TDOT HELP trucks, fire trucks, tack trucks, asphalt pavers, milling machines, rollers).
  • Repair engines, transmissions, electrical systems, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, emissions systems, suspension systems, and brake systems (hydraulic, electric, air).
  • Service cars, light trucks, vans, SUVs (gas, diesel, hybrid), and small engines (generators, lawn mowers, chainsaws).
  • Perform preventive maintenance: oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, tire balancing/replacement, greasing, track adjustments, and safety inspections (fire extinguishers, warning triangles).
• Inspecting Equipment
  • Diagnose malfunctions by listening to noises, visual inspection, and reading diagnostic codes.
  • Inspect equipment and test-drive vehicles to identify issues.
• Decision-Making and Problem-Solving
  • Determine if malfunctioning equipment can be safely operated.
  • Analyze data to select correct maintenance/repair procedures.
• Operating Vehicles and Equipment
  • Test repaired vehicles/equipment to verify functionality.
  • Operate vehicles/machinery (excavators, snowplow trucks, forklifts, tractors, backhoes, dozers, graders, loaders, under-bridge inspection trucks, bucket trucks, TDOT HELP trucks, tack trucks, asphalt pavers, milling machines, rollers).
  • Operate computerized groundspeed controls for tack trucks, snow/ice removal, herbicide application, and asphalt equipment.
• Physical Tasks
  • Replace parts requiring bending, stooping, overhead lifting, or lifting heavy items.
  • Climb/balance on ladders, scaffolding, vehicles, slopes, hills, and roadway structures in varied environmental conditions.
• Training and Documentation
  • Provide on-the-job training and equipment orientation to other employees.
  • Document calibration of computerized controls, work orders, maintenance records, equipment usage logs (mileage, hours, checklists), and personal time/leave.
  • Attend training to maintain certifications, licenses, and technical knowledge (e.g., environmental compliance, new TDOT equipment).
• Communication
  • Coordinate with supervisors/peers on work status, policies, procedures, and parts/supplies.
  • Communicate with external partners/vendors for cost-effective repairs and ordering accuracy.
  • Respond to roadside/worksite emergencies as required.
• Tool and Machine Operation
  • Use standard and specialized tools (hand tools, air compressors, jacks, chain hoists, air wrenches, lifts, welders, cutting torches, drill presses, lathes, grinders, diagnostic machines).
