Responsibilities
- Lead correctional staff and guide daily operations, including scheduling, training, and ensuring safety for both staff and inmates.
- Improve security procedures and operational workflows within the facility.
- Oversee facility security, including contraband searches, inmate counts, feeding, and movement throughout housing and work areas.
- Monitor inmate behavior, conduct or supervise searches, and intervene in disruptive situations.
- Manage inmate transfers and transportation.
- Supervise inmates working in construction, maintenance, laundry, food service, industrial shops, and agricultural operations, including outdoor work in difficult weather or around heavy machinery.
- Participate in emergency response efforts, including providing first aid, calling for additional help, carrying injured individuals, or using necessary force (e.g., chemical agents or firearms) to maintain safety.
- Review inmate records, enforce rules, and ensure disciplinary procedures are followed correctly.
- Oversee required paperwork, reports, inspections, and corrections.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Six years of full-time correctional or law enforcement experience.
- At least three years of supervisory experience, including one year as a midlevel manager.
- Clear communication skills, dependability, and strong situational awareness.
- Strong organizational skills for managing schedules, reports, inspections, and documentation.
- Ability to respond quickly to operational needs and keep leadership informed.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure, work well with others, follow rules and policies, and solve problems as they arise.
Qualifications
- Understanding of the department’s structure, policies, rules, and regulations.
- Experience supervising other supervisors as a midlevel manager.
- Strong leadership presence and ability to inspire confidence in staff.
- Skill in de-escalating tension, calming situations, and supporting morale.
- Strategic thinking for planning and improving daily operations.
- Good judgment for decisions about discipline, emergencies, and use-of-force situations.
- Ability to mentor Lieutenants and Captains and help them grow as leaders.
- Proactive problem-solving, accountability, integrity, and adaptability to shifting priorities.
Additional Information
- Pre-Service Training Academy required.
- Hazardous Duty/Longevity position.
- Retiree salary will be 2.5% less than the posted salary.
- No overnight travel; may include day trips.
- Work site visits required.
