TDCJ - Maintenance Supervisor III - General Mainte

About the role

This position involves supervising maintenance and construction work within a correctional environment, ensuring compliance with safety, security, and operational standards.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, schedule, assign, inspect, and participate in general maintenance and construction work.
• Coordinate work assignments with other supervisors to optimize staff, materials, equipment, and time.
• Estimate labor hours, materials, and other resources needed for projects.
• Request materials, tools, and supplies for maintenance and construction work.
• Prepare reports and maintain accurate records of repairs and completed work.
• Train and supervise inmates assigned to maintenance and construction duties.
• Ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards.
• Help maintain the security and accountability of assigned inmates.
• Perform hands-on work involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical systems, and general repairs.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least two years of paid general maintenance or construction experience, or qualifying technical or military training combined with experience.
• Understanding of basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical work, and general maintenance procedures.
• Ability to safely use common maintenance and construction tools and equipment.
• Ability to organize assignments, solve problems, and keep projects on schedule.
• Ability to clearly communicate instructions and work well with other staff and departments.
• Ability to prepare accurate records, reports, supply requests, and repair documentation.
• Comfort working in a correctional environment and protecting critical infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Experience with HVAC and/or refrigeration.
• Experience training and supervising inmates.
• Strong hands-on experience in several maintenance trades.
• Ability to estimate project labor, materials, and costs accurately.
• Confidence supervising crews while also participating in the work when needed.
• Understanding of TDCJ or similar agency policies, procedures, safety requirements, and security practices.
• Ability to work independently, use good judgment, and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.
