TDCJ - Counsel Substitute III
About the Role
Performs advanced work as a representative and advocate for inmates in a correctional facility. Coordinates counsel substitute program activities and supervises the work of others. Operates under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates counsel substitute program activities, including case management and staffing assignments at an agency facility or unit.
- Works with agency, facility, and unit supervisory staff to ensure proper implementation of policies and procedures.
- Participates in assigning representation for unusual and sensitive inmate disciplinary cases.
- Coordinates maintenance of program records and prepares related reports.
- Oversees interviews of inmates charged with violations of agency, facility, and unit rules and regulations.
- Explains charges to inmates and agency or contract facility employees.
- Oversees investigation of allegations and reviews written statements and documentary evidence.
- Analyzes inmates' positions, develops strategies of defense, and advises inmates on alternative plans of action.
- Attends disciplinary hearings, negotiates the mitigation of punishments, and advises and assists inmates with disciplinary appellate procedures.
- Trains and supervises the work of others, ensuring consistent and professional performance.
- Assists in maintaining the security of inmates and the overall safety of the correctional environment.
Qualifications

Additional Information
- Travel: 25% - Position may spend 1-5 nights away per month.
- Pre-Service Training Academy Required: Yes.
- Hazardous Duty/Longevity Position: Hazardous Duty.
- Outside applicants will be required to submit to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment.
