TCEQ - Chemist II-IV

About the role

Join TCEQ's Office of Waste and contribute to agency efforts to regulate the generation, treatment, storage, and disposal of various wastes and the cleanup of contaminated sites. This position is part of the Waste Permits Division.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced chemical, analytical, and technical reviews and evaluations of applications, reports, and plans pertaining to waste management; determine compliance with applicable laws, rules, technical principles, policies, and procedures; and process to completion.
  • Provide information concerning authorizations and authorization processes to internal and external customers through verbal communication, correspondence, meetings, presentations, and public hearings.
  • Provide training, including mentoring staff. Develop and apply expert-level technical and regulatory expertise.
  • Lead or participate in special projects, such as maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs), rule writing, bill analysis, guidance document development, and streamlining work processes.
  • Assist customers on the waste permits program through verbal communication, correspondence, data reports, presentations, and respond to Public Information Requests (PIRs).

Requirements

Below are the education and experience requirements for each level in the career ladder:

Chemist II

  • A bachelor's degree in natural or physical science from an accredited college or university which included 24 semester hours in chemistry that included 3 semester hours in analytical chemistry or instrumental analysis.
  • One year of full-time experience in the field of Chemist activities may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.

Chemist III

  • A bachelor's degree in natural or physical science from an accredited college or university which included 24 semester hours in chemistry, plus one year of full-time experience in a TCEQ chemistry laboratory, or with activities directly related to the work performed.
  • One year (24 semester hours) of graduate study in chemistry may be substituted for the required experience.
  • One year of full-time experience in the field of Chemist activities may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.

Career Ladder Progression: One year of full-time experience as a Chemist II at TCEQ.

Chemist IV

  • A bachelor's degree in natural or physical science which included 24 semester hours in chemistry from an accredited college or university, plus two years of full-time experience in a TCEQ chemistry laboratory or with activities directly related to the examples of work performed.
  • One year (24 semester hours) of graduate study in chemistry may be substituted for each year of the required experience.
  • One year of full-time experience in the field of Chemist activities may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.

Career Ladder Progression: One year of full-time experience as a Chemist III at TCEQ.

Employees in this classification series may research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure, including but not limited to a communication infrastructure system, cybersecurity system, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment system, or water treatment facility. The ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a requirement to be hired for and to continue to be employed with TCEQ.

A copy of your official college transcript or evaluation of foreign credentials in CAPPS is required if needed to meet the qualifications listed above.

Schedule

Standard business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Individual and work group schedules are determined by the TCEQ Austin Office.
