Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in social work, psychology, nursing, or related human services field.

Licensure: None required.

Skills/Competencies: Ability to perform job responsibilities with a high degree of initiative and independent judgment.

The Therapeutic Behavioral Service (TBS) Specialist, under the administrative/clinical supervision of the Clinical Director of Clinical Services, provides Therapeutic Behavioral Services to clients, their families, and/or significant others as needed. He or she works with clients in residential and community settings, and works to provide support – including education and consultation – for parents and/or caregivers, case coordination, and symptom management and monitoring. The TBS Specialist is expected to meet the program’s productivity target for billable service each week. Services take place in the office, the home, and the community.

  • Accept assignment of cases from the supervisor to provide Therapeutic Behavioral Services for clients, their families, and/or significant others as needed, including: community organizations, schools, other health and social service professionals, the justice system, and other agencies involved with the client.
  • Accept case assignments – stepping down from a higher level of care – from the clinical supervisor and jointly develop tasks and interventions that implement treatment goals.
  • Provide Therapeutic Behavioral Services including, but not limited to:
    • development/review of the client’s treatment plan
    • crisis work – providing assistance and support in crisis situations
    • support, including education and consultation for families and/or significant others regarding the client’s mental illness
    • individual interventions
    • symptom monitoring and self-management of symptoms
    • assistance in increasing social support skills and networks
    • coordination of necessary evaluations and assessments, including referral and linkage to other healthcare, behavioral health care, and non-health care services
    • necessary follow-up to determine if services are adequately meeting the needs of the client
    • access to resources in the community
  • Provide services to each client in accordance with medical necessity and as outlined in the client’s treatment plan. Protect clients from physical and emotional harm emanating from themselves, others, or the environment including use of the Therapeutic Crisis Model of Intervention, utilizing physical restraints as necessary.
  • Recognize the significance of the parent and/or caregiver in the client’s life and demonstrate the skills to engage the client, primary family, and other supportive adults in the treatment planning process.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the clinical record through the timely completion of assigned documentation in accordance with applicable licensing and accreditation regulations and standards.
  • Work a flexible workweek which can include evenings and weekends.
