TBM Mechanical Superintendent
About the role
The position is responsible for overseeing the mechanical repair work and maintenance on the TBM and construction equipment. It involves coordinating machine assembly and installation, managing the preventative maintenance program, and performing repairs. The role also includes supervising craft mechanics to ensure equipment is maintained in optimal condition.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, supervise, and participate in the technical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and all supporting construction equipment.
- Lead workforce organization, employee delegation, and vendor selection for parts, services, and technical support.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety, quality, and environmental standards across project operations.
- Foster positive employee relations by supporting professional development, coaching team members, and resolving personnel issues through effective problem-solving.
- Establish and implement best practices to guarantee high-quality workmanship and operational reliability.
- Maintain spare parts inventory, ensuring timely availability of components critical to TBM operations.
- Collaborate with the TBM manufacturer to manage consignment parts packages and oversee their utilization on-site.
- Plan, coordinate, and schedule personnel assignments to achieve on-time and efficient project completion.
- Manage operational costs and ensure adherence to established budgetary goals and cost-control measures.
- Participate in weekly progress and schedule coordination meetings with project stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors to secure competitive pricing, quality materials, and reliable support.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to support overall project success.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of relevant mechanical experience, preferably in tunneling or heavy civil construction.
- 2+ years of supervisory or team leadership experience required.
- TBM manufacturer-provided training on TBM operations and maintenance preferred.
- Hands-on experience with hard rock Main Beam, EPB, and/or Single Shield TBMs required.
- Strong understanding of tunneling equipment and industry best practices required.
- In-depth knowledge of Tunnel Boring Machine hydraulic systems and their integration with operating parameters.
- Strong understanding of PLC programming coordination with TBM hydraulic systems.
- Ability to adapt TBM operations and maintenance strategies to varying geological conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise craft employees effectively.
- Strong decision-making, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to collaborate across diverse teams, including vendors, engineers, and field personnel.
- Committed to maintaining a positive, safe, and productive work environment.
- Comfortable working closely with TBM vendors to resolve technical and performance-related issues.
- Cleared and effective communication with a diverse range of personnel at all organizational levels.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.

Benefits
Frontier-Kemper offers a competitive compensation package, including a salary range of $199,000.00 - $261,000.00 depending upon experience. No staffing agency candidates will be considered for this position. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, as project demands require.
