About the role

This classification performs criminal investigations, criminal identification, case preparation, and court testimony duties at the entry/training level under direct supervision. As investigative knowledge and proficiency increase, employees work more independently. Successful completion of a mandatory probation period and required qualifications leads to reclassification to the next level in the series; unacceptable performance results in demotion or termination.

Five positions are located in the TBI Memphis Field Office (Crockett, Dyer, Fayette, Gibson, Haywood, Lake, Lauderdale, Obion, and Shelby counties). Four are in Field Investigations and one in Fire Investigations. Positions in Shelby County receive a $10,000 annual bonus.

Pay

Monthly: $5,647.00 – $9,005.00
Annual: $67,764.00 – $108,060.00

Responsibilities

• Perform law enforcement duties to protect self and others, including use of force (up to deadly force), pursuit and apprehension of suspects, physical training, and emergency/non-emergency vehicle operation.
• Engage in strenuous physical activity such as moving heavy equipment/supplies/evidence, conducting physical searches, and installing surveillance equipment.
• Maintain confidentiality and discretion to preserve investigative integrity.
• Exercise sound judgment in high-pressure or high-risk environments.
• Gather information and evidence through interviews, crime scene analysis, surveillance, digital evidence collection, and identifying training gaps.
• Complete reports documenting investigative and support activities.
• Obtain and execute legal process (search warrants, subpoenas, arrest warrants) and testify in court.
• Collaborate with supervisors, peers, and other law enforcement agencies to assist in investigations and support activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• At least 21 years of age on the application date.
• U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident (must apply for or obtain citizenship within six years of employment start date).
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license with no more than 4 moving violations in the past five years; no DUI, reckless driving, or license suspension for moving violations.
• Willingness to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons; no legal prohibition from purchasing or possessing firearms.
• Willingness to obtain a Security Clearance.
• Supply fingerprints for a criminal history records check and complete a background disclosure form.
• Subject to an intense background investigation, including checks of criminal records, driving history, social media, credit, education, military service, previous employment, drug use, reference verification, and a polygraph examination.
• No convictions, guilty pleas, or nolo contendere pleas to felonies or integrity-based misdemeanors (e.g., force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, DUI, or controlled substances). A pattern of misdemeanors may disqualify applicants. Exceptions may be considered for "youthful indiscretions" (excluding domestic offenses).
• No felony convictions or dishonorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces.
• Participate in pre-employment, random, and for-cause drug and substance abuse testing.
• Pass a physical examination and psychological evaluation consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act and related to essential job functions.
• Ability to utilize finger dexterity and hand strength to operate a firearm slide.
• Ability to alternate from standing to prone to standing positions using stamina, strength, and coordination.
