About the role

The Tax Examiner I position in the Taxation Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR) is dedicated to promoting voluntary compliance with all tax laws through information, education, assistance, and customer service. The Call Center serves over 200,000 customers annually, addressing a wide range of tax-related inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Address citizens' tax-related inquiries ranging from sales and marijuana excise tax to wage withholding and income tax.
  • Instruct taxpayers on completing applicable forms and documents.
  • Make determinations of appropriate tax collection procedures and make authorizations or denials of refunds or assessments.
  • Provide information regarding tax statutes, department policies, procedures, and positions on taxes administered by the department by telephone, web messages, and letters.
  • Educate inbound callers over the phone on specific and ambiguous tax issues.
  • Analyze and understand complex issues affecting their tax accounts in a fast-paced environment.
  • Aid callers with exceptional customer service in utilizing the Department of Revenue or related entities' websites, tax software, or service portals.
  • Learns and adapts to changes in statutes, policies, and procedures on a frequent basis.
  • Facilitate the resolution of taxpayer account issues in accordance with state statutes and policies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of experience in customer service experience, with six months of this experience including work in accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, or tax-administration.
  • Additional appropriate education in Accounting, Business, Finance will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • State experience working with GenTax.
  • Experience in bookkeeping, technical accounting, tax administration, business economics, finance.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
  • Previous call center experience.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications include high school diploma or GED.
  • Substitutions for experience can be made with appropriate education in Accounting, Business, Finance.
  • Preferred qualifications include state experience working with GenTax, experience in bookkeeping, technical accounting, tax administration, business economics, finance, proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, and previous call center experience.

Pay

Competitive pay is offered for the Tax Examiner I position.

Schedule

Examiners may be required to report to the Denver office at 1351 5th St, Denver, CO 80204 for the duration of the training. Once the training has been successfully completed, they are expected to move to the work-from-home environment with occasional requirement to travel to the Denver office. Candidates who live 75 miles or more from the Lakewood location should discuss the travel requirements with the supervisor at the time of interview.
