About the role
The Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR) seeks a customer service-oriented individual with accounting knowledge to join the Tax Examiner I team in the Taxpayer Service Call Center. The Call Center serves over 200,000 customers annually, addressing a wide range of tax-related inquiries.
Responsibilities
- Instruct taxpayers on completing applicable forms and documents
- Make determinations of appropriate tax collection procedures and make authorizations or denials of refunds or assessments
- Provide information regarding tax statutes, department policies, procedures, and positions on taxes administered by the department by telephone, web messages, and issuance of letters
- Educate inbound callers over the phone on specific and ambiguous tax issues
- Analyze and understand complex issues affecting their tax accounts in a fast-paced environment
- Aid callers with exceptional customer service in utilizing the Department of Revenue or related entity’s websites, tax software, or service portals to file returns, submit payments, access tax information, and other activities
- Learn and adapt to changes in statutes, policies, and procedures on a frequent basis
- Facilitate the resolution of taxpayer account issues in accordance with state statutes and policies
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Two (2) years of experience in customer service experience (six months of this experience must include work in accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, or tax-administration)
Preferred Qualifications
- State experience working with GenTax
- Experience in bookkeeping, technical accounting, tax administration, business economics, finance
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Previous call center experience
Conditions of Employment
- Must file all necessary Colorado Individual Income Tax (CIIT) returns and pay tax obligations
- Must undergo a pre-employment evaluation of tax records/accounts to ensure compliance with policy
- Must complete a successful background investigation and reference check prior to appointment
- May be required to operate a vehicle as part of the position
- Must maintain a safe driving record and valid driver license
