Tax Manager, Core Tax Services - Passthrough Focus
About the Role
The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifies different methods of complying with tax regulations. As the primary client contact for complex tax issues, the Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes and communicates potential risks, and identifies changes in tax policy. The role also involves marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, and may include providing written tax advice to clients.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance:
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
- Ensures self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
- Conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolves all tax issues with clients; involves specialists where appropriate.
- Communicates with clients and Assurance regarding issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plans and reviews the tax process, including:
- Budgeting and staffing.
- Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance from Seniors.
- Timely billing, including management of out-of-scope activity and communication to clients.
- Timely collection of accounts receivable.
- Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.
- Provides advice to clients in a timely manner.
- Research:
- Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely.
- Applies Firm and professional standards for preparation of written tax advice (WTA) and tax returns.
- Involves Firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals:
- Correctly and proactively applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Applies ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM correctly and proactively.
- Explains components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients, including complexities surrounding ASC 740.
- Communicates with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
- Utilizes and manages STS as needed.
- Tax Consulting:
- Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes.
- Considers the applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
- Develops and implements work plans to organize STS assistance on ongoing projects.
- Serves as a technical resource.
- Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA).
- Provides effective assistance with exam support.
- Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associates.
- Tax Specialization:
- Develops an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more areas of taxation (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
- May organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in area of specialization, involving Firm specialists.
- Strategy Development:
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel (e.g., reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits).
- Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action.
- Identifies and leverages lessons learned from prior projects to improve processes and methods.
- Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
- Trains associates and seniors on current software tools.
- Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Five (5) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
Qualifications
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Pay
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The following ranges apply by location:
- California: $112,000 - $150,000
- Colorado: $104,500 - $115,500
- Illinois: $105,000 - $130,000
- Maryland: $113,000 - $120,000
- Massachusetts: $120,000 - $127,000
- Minnesota: $90,000 - $120,000
- New Jersey: $115,000 - $140,000
- Ohio: $105,000 - $150,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $125,000 - $150,000
- Washington: $107,400 - $126,900
- Washington DC: $120,000 - $140,000
