About the role

The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services advises clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifies different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, you will apply knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognize and communicate potential risks, and identify changes in tax policy. You will also be involved in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise and may provide written tax advice to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure clients comply with all applicable tax authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensure compliance with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
  • Conduct top-level reviews of tax returns and resolve all tax issues with clients; involve specialists where appropriate.
  • Communicate with clients and Assurance teams regarding any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
  • Plan and review the tax process, including:
    • Budgeting and staffing.
    • Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance from Seniors.
    • Timely billing, including management of identified out-of-scope activity and communication to clients.
    • Timely collection of accounts receivable.
  • Manage client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.
  • Provide advice to clients in a timely manner.
  • Identify when research is needed, frame issues clearly, and report analysis concisely.
  • Apply Firm and professional standards for preparation of written tax advice (WTA) and tax returns; involve firm specialists as appropriate.
  • Correctly and proactively apply Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) for tax accruals.
  • Explain and discuss components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions with clients, as well as complexities surrounding ASC 740.
  • Communicate with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes.
  • Consider the applicability of consulting specialties for each client and develop work plans for ongoing projects.
  • Serve as a technical resource and ensure client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding written tax advice.
  • Provide effective assistance with exam support and frame projects/issues for delegation to seniors and associates.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax specialties (e.g., corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
  • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the Firm, or personnel, such as reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits.
  • Review studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative courses of action.
  • Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects, review their work, and provide feedback.
  • Train associates and seniors on current software tools and act as a Career Advisor.
  • Schedule and manage the workload of associates and senior associates.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
  • Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
  • Five or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.

Qualifications

  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
  • Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, as well as decision-making abilities.
  • Capacity to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals.
  • Capable of composing written tax advice.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions.

Pay

Individual salaries are determined after consideration of numerous factors, including qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Ranges by location:

  • California: $112,000 - $150,000
  • Colorado: $104,500 - $115,500
  • Illinois: $105,000 - $130,000
  • Maryland: $113,000 - $120,000
  • Massachusetts: $120,000 - $127,000
  • Minnesota: $90,000 - $120,000
  • New Jersey: $115,000 - $140,000
  • Ohio: $105,000 - $150,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $125,000 - $150,000
  • Washington: $107,400 - $126,900
  • Washington DC: $120,000 - $140,000
