Tax Experienced Senior, Corporate/ASC 740
About the role
As a Tax Experienced Senior in Core Tax Services, you will utilize research skills, apply tax foundational knowledge to understand potential tax issues, gather client information for filing, participate in tax planning, recognize and communicate risks, prepare tax accrual workpapers, and work with tax software to complete tax returns for review. You will act as the main client contact for general questions and may supervise and review the work of Core Tax Services Associates.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance
- Ensure clients comply with all applicable tax authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
- Ensure compliance with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
- Manage tax projects by planning processes, procedures, and communicating expectations with preparers.
- Conduct detailed reviews of returns, provide review notes, and raise potential tax issues.
- Meet internal deadlines to align with client expectations for timely service delivery.
- Identify book-to-tax differences and manage project budgets, resources, and out-of-scope activities.
- Research
- Identify when research is needed, frame issues clearly, and report analysis concisely.
- Apply Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Apply Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Prepare provision workpapers and discuss with team members.
- Identify and discuss uncertain tax positions with team members.
- Review and prepare footnote disclosures in compliance with ASC 740.
- Utilize and manage STS and draft tax provision memorandums.
- Communicate with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews.
- Tax Consulting
- Develop, recommend, and implement methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing tax liabilities.
- Identify consulting opportunities to reduce client tax burdens.
- Provide support for client consulting projects and gather relevant information for controversy work.
- Document significant tax positions clearly and correctly, in accordance with Firm policies.
- Strategy Development
- Introduce and develop new ideas to improve client, Firm, or personnel positions, such as reducing taxes or expenses.
- Prepare studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative courses of action.
- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage day-to-day work assignments of Core Tax Services Associates.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback to Associates.
- Act as a mentor to Core Tax Services Associates.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics or a Bachelor’s degree in another focus area with CPA certification (or Authorization to Test for the CPA exam prior to start date).
- Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Three or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- Prior basic supervisory experience preferred.
Qualifications
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) preferred.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software.
- Solid verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow instructions, prepare simple tax returns, and take initiative without prompting.
- Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and delegate work as needed.
- Ability to train other team members.
Pay
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The following ranges apply:
- California: $96,000 - $125,000
- Colorado: $85,500 - $104,500
- Illinois: $90,000 - $108,000
- Maryland: $98,000 - $110,000
- Massachusetts: $102,000 - $119,000
- Minnesota: $80,000 - $95,000
- New Jersey: $88,000 - $125,000
- Ohio: $85,000 - $115,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $110,000 - $125,000
- Washington: $87,400 - $120,000
- Washington DC: $105,000 - $117,000
