About the Role

The Tax Experienced Senior in Core Tax Services is responsible for utilizing research skills, applying tax foundational knowledge to understand potential tax issues, gathering client information for filing, participating in tax planning, recognizing and communicating potential risks, preparing tax accrual workpapers, and working with tax software applications to complete tax returns for review. This role acts as the main client contact for general questions and may supervise and review the work of Core Tax Services Associates.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensures clients comply with all applicable tax authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
    • Ensures compliance with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
    • Manages tax projects by planning procedures, communicating expectations, and coordinating engagement.
    • Conducts detailed reviews of tax returns and provides appropriate review notes for preparers.
    • Meets internal deadlines to align with client expectations for timely service delivery.
    • Identifies book-to-tax differences and manages project budgets, monitoring actual vs. planned resources.
  • Research
    • Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely.
    • Applies Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns.
  • ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
    • Applies Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
    • Prepares provision workpapers and discusses them with team members.
    • Identifies and discusses uncertain tax positions with the team.
    • Reviews and prepares footnote disclosures in compliance with ASC 740.
    • Utilizes and manages STS and drafts tax provision memorandums.
    • Communicates with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Assists in developing and recommending methods to maximize client benefits, particularly by reducing tax liability.
    • Identifies consulting opportunities to reduce client’s tax burden.
    • Provides support for client consulting projects and gathers relevant information for controversy work.
    • Documents significant tax positions clearly and correctly, in accordance with Firm policies.
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduces and develops new ideas to improve client, Firm, or personnel positions, such as reducing taxes or expenses.
    • Prepares studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
    • Supervises and manages day-to-day work assignments of Core Tax Services Associates.
    • Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates.
    • Acts as a mentor to Core Tax Services Associates.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics or a Bachelor’s degree in another focus area with CPA certification (or Authorization to Test for the CPA exam prior to start date).
  • Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
  • Three or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience preferred.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
  • Prior basic supervisory experience preferred.

Skills

  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and prepare simple tax returns.
  • Proactive in taking appropriate actions without being asked and seeks advice on compliance-related issues.
  • Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and effectively delegate work.
  • Ability to train other team members.

Pay

Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The following ranges apply by location:

  • California: $96,000 - $125,000
  • Colorado: $85,500 - $104,500
  • Illinois: $90,000 - $108,000
  • Maryland: $98,000 - $110,000
  • Massachusetts: $102,000 - $119,000
  • Minnesota: $80,000 - $95,000
  • New Jersey: $88,000 - $125,000
  • Ohio: $85,000 - $115,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $110,000 - $125,000
  • Washington: $87,400 - $120,000
  • Washington DC: $105,000 - $117,000
